I don’t know what it is about cartoon characters, but the Big-Eyed Boy certainly seems to pay more attention to them than me when it comes to learning about “boring” subjects like health and nutrition.
Last year, we traveled back to the time of castles and dragons to take part in Little D’s Nutrition Expedition, a free 10-lesson plan that incorporates health, nutrition, language arts and more. My son enjoyed it so much that, to this day, he’ll point at the chicken on his plate and announce that he needs more from King Henry’s meat group (but not so much from Princess Peapod’s vegetable group next time, please, Mom?).
Now the folks at Nutrition Explorations have come up with another program incorporating health, nutrition, language arts and social studies: Arianna’s Nutrition Expedition. Although they recommend it for 4th graders, I’ve looked over the material and think it would be perfectly suitable for my 3rd grader.
Meanwhile, the site is chock full of other resources, including a family guide to healthy eating with yummy recipes.
